Over the course of a weekend at the Piraeus Municipal Theatre in Athens, authors, artists and people of culture will gather for a groundbreaking free event. The NOW celebration, which will last three days, has literature at its heart: emerging young voices from the Balkans (Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo) will meet their Greek counterparts (Ersi Sotiropoulos, Theodoros Grigoriadis, Christos Chrissopoulos) to discuss literature and its role in the current European and international context. The motor behind the event is the Finnegan's List, a project sponsored by the European Society of Authors, in which eminent authors from all over the world recommend books from past and present – works that can help us to understand the world of today.
In addition to literature, visitors can discover visual art (by Anastasia Douka), live performance (Tzeni Argyriou) and documentary filmmaking (Greek Documentary Association). A series of round table discussions on translation, cultural policy and documentaries will offer stimuli for reflection, debate and entertainment. NOW aspires to attract an audience from Attica to Piraeus. The Piraeus Municipal Theatre is a historical building situated at a focal geographical point for the events currently unfolding in the Mediterranean. NOW is organized by the European Society of Authors in collaboration with the Allianz Cultural Foundation, the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus and many more partners.

ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑThe recent happenings in Europe, particularly in the Balkans, challenge the political, economic and cultural development of the continent. Troubling phenomena include the “Balkan route”, with the refugee crisis and all it entails, the closing of borders, Euroscepticism, and the emergence of Fascism in many European countries. We will gather in Piraeus, the harbor of Athens, a focal point for the events currently unfolding in Europe, to discuss literature and its role in understanding, interpreting and resisting certain “dystopian” social and political conditions, along with a rich program including visual arts, documentaries, and performance. Participants will come from Greece, Croatia, France, Serbia, Kosovo, and Germany.
